Local Nature Recovery Strategy published for Gloucestershire

Gloucestershire County Council has published the county’s first Local Nature Recovery Strategy on 13 February 2026. This is a bold and coordinated spatial plan, developed with Gloucestershire Local Nature Partnership, with 113 suggested measures to restore nature in Gloucestershire.

I believe the Local Nature Recovery Strategy will be a great tool for Gloucestershire, with uses in relation to strategic planning, Biodiversity Net Gain, agri-environment funding, strategic nature conservation projects and community and neighbourhood nature conservation projects.

Huge thanks to Gloucestershire County Council, and to Gloucestershire Centre for Environmental Records for their work on developing the interactive Local Habitat Map and species records analysis.

Many thanks to many Local Nature Partnership organisations, farmers, landowners, members of the community and local experts who have contributed information, local knowledge, advice and expertise. LNP members involved include, but are not limited to:

Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust ● WWT ● National Trust ● Forestry Commission ● FWAG south west ● Cotswolds National Landscape Board ● Wye Valley National Landscape ● Stroud Valleys Project ● Woodland Trust ● Gloucestershire County Council ● Forest of Dean District Council ● Cheltenham Borough Council ● Stroud District Council ● Cotswold District Council ● Tewkesbury Borough Council ● Gloucester City Council ● CPRE Gloucestershire ● Newt Conservation Partnership ● Environment Agency ● Natural England ● University of Gloucestershire CCRI ● Gloucestershire Naturalists Society ● Cotswold Lakes Trust ● Butterfly Conservation ● Malvern Hills National Landscape ● Severn Estuary Partnership ● Association of Severn Estuary Relevant Authorities.

The delivery phase of the Local Nature Recovery Strategy will now start. The key functions of this delivery phase are likely to be:

  1. Lead and convene a delivery partnership to plan and prioritise delivery

  2. Embed the Local Nature Recovery Strategy into local decision making

  3. Identify priority strategic projects and facilitate project development

  4. Monitor and report on delivery of nature recovery activities in the Local Nature Recovery Strategy area

The Local Nature Recovery Strategy will provide a vital tool for planners, farmers, landowners, organisations and communities to work together on shared priorities for nature.

All Local Authorities are required to have regard to Gloucestershire's Local Nature Recovery Strategy in decision and plan making.

With a Local Nature Recovery Officer at Gloucestershire County Council and a strong Local Nature Partnership network across the county, Gloucestershire is ready to turn plans into action.
